For my 20 Time Project, which I will be dedicating 20% of my class time towards, I will be addressing a problem I have had since I was six years old. As a former basketball player, I've always felt like the weight of my basketball shoes has held me back. From my experience, basketball shoes are thick, heavy, and bulky, which hinder performance by slowing movement and increasing fatigue. On the other hand, running shoes are light and flexible, but can't be worn for basketball because they provide no ankle support. In any given basketball game, players will need to push off either foot in all directions, so ankle support is more of a necessity rather than a precaution. My ideal shoe will be a combination of these two designs to create a shoe for optimal performance. Since prototyping different designs and measuring their respective weights is unfeasible, it will be tough to compare designs. That being said, I will focus on minimizing heavy material and incorporate mesh-like materials into the design. Moving forward, I will continue to sketch my ideas and research the causes of ankle injuries.
I think this is an important issue when it comes to efficiency in playing basketball. I used to play basketball as well and I always found it hard to be agile while wearing such bulky shoes.I do think that you could go above and beyond just researching and sketching a shoe. Maybe conduct a survey or an experiment on basketball players to see how they play using running shoes vs basketball shoes or if you happen to find thin shoes with ankle support, test those ones as well. What is your end goal?

ReplyDeleteAlthough i am not a basketball player I can understand the pains of getting the ideal sports equipment. And i think that you are lucky and right on track because you already know about the subject (In this case ankle support).
Now that you started sketching I would like to know what type of Mesh-like materials are you looking for? Just out of curiosity.
Also if you succeed in creating "the best shoe ever for basketball" ;), will you patent the design, and try to sell the idea to big corporations?
Anyway, it sounds and looks pretty fun!!!

ReplyDeleteOne thing you may want to consider in the designing of a supportive shoe is the sole. Running shoes have little to no soles because they add weight, but basketball shoes do need soles so as not to wear out the player's feet. However, materials used to cushion feet can often add excessive weight and slow down players. One thing you should consider is the material you make the shoes out of to provide support but not add weight.
